HORSEPOWER TALK MAY / JUNE 2007

ANNOUNCEMENT:

PLEASE NOTE: Lindsey Racing is taking a Holiday Vacation and our office will be CLOSED June 29th thru July 8th. Plan to place your orders prior to that week. Because we are closed the week of July 4TH, your emails and phone calls will go unanswered. Lindsey Racing will be open again on July 9th.

MAY / JUNE NEWS

Since we were covered up and short handed last month (and we still are), the May Horsepower Talk didn't come together. We have combined May and June this issue to try to make up for that. As promised, we have doubled the Customer Cars and Specials to make up for it.

These front springs gotta go!

Woops! That's going to be a 1 second penalty!

If my tires aren't smoking... I'm not driving hard enough!

Autocross season is here already and people are chomping at the bit to get their cars back out of the garage and burn up some tires. Here in Oklahoma City, the facility we have been using is getting so popular, about every car club in town has it booked on the weekends. If you want to run down Corvettes, you can go to their event. If trying to follow Miatas through the cones is your thing, you can do that do with the Miata club. A little something for everybody, I suppose. If running with like brand is your cup of tea, you can join the Porche club on their track dates.

For the first time we have decided to shut down the business completely for the week of July 4th. Taking turns for vacations has just become too much of a shuffle. We have decided to give this a try this year and see how it works. Phone Calls and E-Mails will be returned after we re-open. Please place your orders early to accomodate your needs ahead of time if possible.

All Web Site orders placed will sit idle until we return.

Wes has been taking some time off this May. We apologize if this has caused you any inconvenience because you were in the middle of a project when this happend. This has added to the work load on the rest of us duing this time as we try to adjust. If you have been trying to contact Wes by E-Mail, they may be going unanswered. Please direct all correspondence to Mike or Dave until things change back to normal.

When Lindsey Racing first had a web presence, we carried restraints, fire systems and driving suits. To be honest, it was more to fill up the web site than it was a product line we counted on for sales. We sold the "Stroud Safety" line of suits, gloves, 4 and 5 point harnesses, shoes and fire bottles. They are locally owned and operated and it made sense at that time. Our orders were manufactured and fulfilled the same day which gave them the latest SFI approved dates possible.

Our margins with Stroud Safety were not large enough to continue pushing the product line, although the products were great. A trip across town to pick up the products and return to ship was time we no longer had available. Those product faded from our site as we focused on our own products.

Today we are happy to say we have jumped back into the Safety Business by carrying some of the top brand names you know and trust. Companies such as Sparco, Simpson, Bell, Kirkey and more. We have a long way to go to populate our site with those products. If you're looking for something from those companies, be sure to drop us an E-Mail or phone call and we would be happy to give you a price quote. These will all fall under the "Safety" catagory in our General Store section.

JUNE SPECIALS

For the Month of June, we will be offering the following special pricing for our retail customers only. Other discounts and programs do not apply and cannot be combined. You must request the special pricing at time of ordering. The shopping cart does not recognize our specials and will NOT automatically give you the special pricing. You MUST either send us a follow up e-mail immediately after ordering through the shopping cart or International Order Form, or give us a telephone call and ask for your special pricing. If you order by phone, you MUST mention the special pricing at time of order. If you contact us after the order is shipped and request the special pricing, it will be too late to receive it.

Needing some new motor mounts? This June, our Motor Mounts are all 10% off the regular price. Ultra mounts, solid mounts, OE or Aftermarket. Choose your mount and save some money this month.

The beautiful Lindsey Racing Short Shift Lever replaces your factory lever and changes the geometry or ratio, shortening the shift throw. Don't miss out on this opportunity get one at 10% off this month.

These cars just keep getting older and older, and the chances of your fuel injector's harness failing keep going up. Age and heat are the enemy. Install our replacement Fuel Injector Harness at 15% off this June and be assured a trouble free solution for years to come.

Like the fuel injector harness, the Crank Reference Sensor Harness takes its toll. A great time to install one is when you're installing your Injector Harness. We will sweeten the deal by offering 10% off this as well.

Our Boost Enhancer was our very first product. Surprisingly with over 1500 of them out there, we still keep selling and building them. We just finished another production run, and with that we are putting them on sale this June. Expect 25% off regular price when ordering.

Bill recently transported his car in from the East Coast for a little sorting, tuning and a few more goodies. This is some of what Bill had to say when he received the car back.

" I bought the car new in 1986 and have owned it ever since. Finally, I decided to add performance to it. That, coupled with an expert tuning by Lindsey Racing has made the car an awesome ride.

Many thanks to Lindsey Racing for the fine job they did on my car. The performance is awesome and is running perfectly. I don't know how you did it, but no turbo lag- it just comes on fast. What a kick in the pants!

    Thanks again,
    Bill"

Having purchased the car new in 1986, he has something you don't always see. Below is the original window sticker from the car. For those of you who have never seen one from a 951, it's interesting. We find the estimated mileage of 19/27 pretty impressive for this stock rocket. At $3.00 + a gallon of gas, many of us will probably be driving our 951s more this summer than normal. Heck... the money you will save will help pay for those next rounds of upgrades!

JUNE CUSTOMER CAR OF THE MONTH

Espen Bratli's Norwegian 944 Turbo

The following was submitted by Espen.

Hi there, 951 pilots! Here is the story of one 951 on the move.

I bought this 1986 Porsche 944 turbo from an insurance company back in 1999 with a friend of mine. It had been stolen and used for 3 bank robberies, outside and engine was ok but the interior was seriously messed up. We stripped it inside and fitted racing seats. Had a blast with the car on track days and club events. The car was fast but I wanted to go faster. My friend lost interest so I bought him out and started on what seems like a never-ending quest for speed, racing in the Norwegian Roadsport Series. The car in stock condition suited the B class just fine with a weight to hp ratio of 5.2 Kg./Hp.

First year of racing, if you could call it racing, everyone including the class C cars left me in the dust. To top this of I was hit hard in the front by a guy spinning his 911… I caught fire!!! Straightening the car I fitted yellow Koni’s, M030 roll bars and fiberglass body parts.

Next season I was in the middle of the field, doing actual racing, keeping up with lots of cars, and as the season progressed I got my first podium (third but still a shiny cup). I got cocky and tried my skills on a hill climbing tarmac race, hit the guardrails doing 100 mph taking out 3 wooden post with the left hand side front suspension. Here is a tip: at standing start hill climbs your front wheels do not heat up for quite a while!!!!

Third season, more experienced, knew my car, chip tuned, modified wastegate spring, race fuel…..things was going well, I got podium after podium, no first place yet, but never worse than fifth. I was leading the Norwegian Roadsport series after 8 races. Last race weekend arrived and I was hysterical, three guys, all able to win the championship, all depending on the outcome. Race funds were low but I had to do something and as luck would have it I came across a S2 gearbox with LSD. Until now all I had used was the OEM open diff 951 gearbox. It made a word of difference in corners, especially accelerating out of corners, it also let me use all 5 gears when racing since it has a lower gear ratio. The 2004 season ended with a killer race, it was dry, it was wet, there where crashes, spinouts and……… I blew my turbo leading the race……50 meters before the race was RED FLAGGED. I was….am Norwegian champion.

Well this was racing in the B class, A class is faster…..

2005 and halve of 2006 was used trying to squeeze reliable horsepower from the 2.5 engine, lots of failures, blown gaskets and general disappointment. I managed to finish 3 out of the 4 last races in the 2006 season with 2 fourth and 1 fifth place. Then I discovered Lindsey Racing and realized I didn’t have to invent the wheel all over again. I have bought the right parts, listened to Lindsey advice, found lots of help from other Lindsey customers like Bob Howard who gave me the idea for my header. I have put together an engine that works reliably with approx. 500 BHP. This engine propelled me to a fifth place in this seasons first race, second place in the second race…. I am currently second overall.

I love my 951 racer and hope others do like me…. Explore the potential of your Porsche, its never-ending!!

Sadly Mike asked me to list the parts I have used on my car, so now I know the approx. amount I have spent…. Thanks Mike!!!

SHOP TALK

After many inquiries over the years from customers asking about carrying a stock replacement header for the 951, we decided it was time to make our own version. We looked at what the current market offered and realized there was room for another example. Especially one with a better overall design. We also realized one of the most important things is to make it available and in stock. We have learned over the years this is a key point in this "Gotta have it yesterday!" aftermarket performance market. We produced 25 sets and have several being ceramic coated in various finishes. If you need a header, and don't want to wait, Lindsey Racing will have you covered.

We have been asked about the single flange design at the cylinder head. One concern raised is the heating and contraction of the pipes stressing the header itself or the cylinder head studs. The cylinder head bolt holes in the single flange are spaced such to allow for growth if it's there. If that's not enough to satisfy you, we can at your request separate the flanges by simply running them through the band saw before shipping to make it a 4 piece flange. You can see the narrow area between the cylinders where the cut would be made. However you like it, we will supply it. Just mention this when ordering.

The runners on this header are straighter than anything else available. Less turns mean less restriction. Less restriction is better performance. The merge collector is also held together by the outlet flange making a stronger joint less prone to fatigue.

951 Headers

Since first selling our MAF kits about 6 years ago, they have changed several times. These changes were usually on behalf of our suppliers and left us little choice. At times, you had to take what you could get. Then about 3 years ago, the major supplier in the aftermarket meter business supplying not only us, but anybody else producing kits for the 951s went out of business. This came as a complete surprise and left us scrambling to keep the product line going.

Another company stepped up and tried to pick up where they left off. Although they got up to speed within a few months, communication was a new problem that we didn't have before.

As you hear rumors both true and false at the retail or public level, we also hear them at the manufacturer level. Some we liked, but most we didn't. It seemed the only way to keep complete control over our MAF meter supply was to take the manufacture of them "in house" as much as possible. Not exactly "in house", but very close by.

Since the MAF system is and will likely always be an integral part of our expanding Horsepower Kits and a necessary step when you reach the level of a turbo upgrade, Lindsey Racing took one step further with their Mass Air Flow systems in 2007 by producing their own meters.

Lindsey Racing is proud to show off our new MAF meter. Although many of you already have one since we have been shipping them for a couple months in certain situations, for the most part, this is their formal announcement.

As you can see, the first more obvious attribute is their colors. We offer our new meters in plain, blue, red and black anodized finish. What's not so obvious is the more important part which is their calibration repeatability. Our previous meters, and the ones our competitors sell, are hand calibrated one at a time. They are placed on a flow bench and the transistors are scraped to change their voltage output characteristics. These flow benches can only flow enough air for 300 HP, so anything beyond that is an educated guess since they cannot actually create what will happen above 300HP. That's crankshaft HP by the way, not RWHP. So having two meters react the same way on the top end would be a difficult task. Impossible, actually.

When working towards even higher horsepower kits, and with our mid level kits, we are in need of a meter that does the same thing every time. Today, or tomorrow. This will allow us to bring to our customer a more pre-tuned solution. And should you ever need a replacement meter, it will be one that doesn't require retuning.

These meters are +/- 1% on their calibration every time. That's because unlike the other meters being used which are hand calibrated, these are factory calibrated by Hitachi so there is no "aftermarket" calibration process necessary. We currently have 3 ranges of meter calibrations depending on the Horsepower requirement.

We currently supply these meters with our Stage 1 or Stage II Meter kits. We will eventually be phasing out our Stage III and IV kits to these meters as well.

Many of you have our Billet Fuel Rail Kit. We have recently worked out a replacement fuel line that runs from the fuel pump to the fuel rail. We are going -6 JIC all the way between the two. If you ever looked closely at the factory fuel filter, you will notice how restrictive it is. The actual hole where the fuel passes through is quite small. For this, we replace the fuel filter completely with another filter that has a -6 inlet and outlet. Look for that kit to make the new products page in the next couple of weeks. We have shipped some already at customer's requests, but the fittings we want to use on the final version are not in yet. This will bring the cost down a few more dollars and eliminate two connections.

FINAL THOUGHTS

We have been running flat out since January and are very much looking forward to a vacation. We hope you take some time to "get away" this summer and spend some time with family and friends.

Until next month, we wish you many safe and quick laps.
