HORSEPOWER TALK JANUARY 2007

JANUARY NEWS

It seems only fitting to start off with a big "Happy New Year!". We at Lindsey Racing hope 2006 was a positive, productive and successful year for everyone. For us here, it certainly was. Lindsey Racing is bigger, better and stronger than ever.

2007 is already looking very exciting with several new products already in production and several more in the planning stage. We will continue to advance the potential of the 944 Turbo this year as well as continue to streamline our business.

This time of year, many of your cars are sitting under "cover" hibernating the winter months away, waiting for that Spring sunshine and warmth to once again revive them. Or, you are taking these months to do some annual maintenance or major upgrades. Perhaps a new turbo, or even a 2.8L conversion. This example in our shop is getting a new 3.0L crank and solid camshaft kit for 2007. The engine is pulled and final decisions are being made. Within a couple of months this car will be back out doing some auto-crossing with 500 WHP @ 18 psi of boost and all the bottom end torque one could ask desire.

Here at Lindsey Racing, we rarely have a car just sitting under cover. Just a few weeks ago we were waiting for the snow to melt so that we could continue development on our new MAF chips coming out. 300 plus RWHP is a little to much for slippery roads.

Whatever road you decide to go down, give us a call and we can help make 2007 your year for performance, handling and reliability.

CUSTOMER CAR OF THE MONTH

JJ Salomon's Sleek Black 951

This beautiful car was built by Park Place Porsche in Dallas for J.J. Salomon. It started as a tired, ugly duckling and is now a show piece with performance to back up the looks.

J.J. is an importer of Nissan Skylines through his company Fast4Wheels.com but has always loved Porsche 944s. After his original N/A 944 met with an untimely demise he decided to go for it with a Turbo. A year & change later here are the results:

This car is very fast with the upgrades & is currently running 20lb. of boost through the Lindsey Racing Super 61 turbo. It posted 308hp at the rear wheels in spite of blowing a hole in a boost coupling hose which limited it to only 13.5lb. during that session!! The hoses & couplings have since been upgraded & the next dyno trip will be substantially higher!

The interior has numerous enhancements including a serious sound system, GPS navigation, and flat screen digital television monitors built into the sun visors.

A little neon was placed in the interior and at the intercooler to add a little sizzle at shows; gotta' bring some bling to the auto show!!!

In his spare time J.J's hobbies include hunting down & embarrassing Corvettes, lesser Ferraris, & motorcycles.

SHOP TALK

Our version of the Porsche Motorsports progressive front coil springs for the 944 Turbo S are almost completed. We should be introducing them and releasing them for shipping mid January.

One of the down sides in the original Porsche spring, aside from being extinct, is the fact that it is too short in length when fully extended. This happens when the suspension is in full droop. When the car is raised in the air, such as when changing tires, the top of the spring can lean or tip out of the upper spring hat. When the car is lowered back down, the spring is not in it's proper position in the hat, and the spring is caught on the outer edge of the spring hat. This causes the car to sit about 3/8" higher on that corner. The spring should be assisted when lowered back down to insure it's proper position. This means you need to align the top of the spring in the hat when the car is not quite all the way down.

If the spring is not assisted during lowering, it will usually find it's way back in position over time. Perhaps the first turn you make, or maybe an hour of driving later. You know when this happens because you hear the "ka-ping" of the spring snapping into place. But in the mean time, especially on a track car, your 4 wheel corner balance is out of whack.

So we not only had to duplicate the effective spring rates, but add some extra length to eliminate this problem without changing the properties of the spring. This took a few proto-types to get it right. Each prototype was fitted back on the car and tested.

What we now have is a spring that when laid side by side with the original, first visual impression is that it's about two inches too long. But that's where the differences end. When you change out the Porsche Motorsports spring with the Lindsey spring, the car now sits at the exact same ride height without the need of any adjustment on the spring perches. Both springs require the same amount of weight to compress the spring to that installed height, and both springs are at the same point in the spring rates as they further compress.

These springs are for the Turbo S only at this time. They will be made available for the non-S models during 2007.

FINAL THOUGHTS

We want to thank all of our customers for your help in making 2006 a great year. Without you, we wouldn't be here. We will continue to work hard in 2007 to maintain your trust as a valued supplier and keep you coming back.

May 2007 be everything you want it to be in all your endeavors.

Until next month, we wish you many safe and quick laps.
